Yes it's kind of expensive but it's also worth like two meals. At the same time you may very well be drunk when you try it and be able to just crush the entire thing yourself. A quintessential New York gem, with lots of hype, but also perhaps deservedly so. The meat was tender, melt in your mouth, and the sandwich was huge. The setting is very much old-style deli and has a charm. It's also in a great location for late night drunken eats and yes they are open quite late which is perfect. I will have to go back here at some because admittedly I was a bit drunk, but I did enjoy it very much. There are few other pastrami sandwich spots that pump out the same quality, so I would say that it's worth a trip here. Also super cool that you may get a sample of the pastrami as you're waiting in line!
Yes, you may have to wait online, but it's worth the wait. Line will probably move pretty quickly and here's the deal when you enter. You're given a ticket. Don't lose the ticket. You'll need that ticket when you're going to leave and pay your bill. PUT THAT TICKET IN A SAFE PLACE. You will need it at the end of your meal. the front of the restaurant is self service! you select your table-claim your table! And then get online in the front of the restaurant to order, and walk your order back to your table yourself , hence self service. If you would like to be waited on, proceed to the back of the restaurant, get online for table service... where a server will come to your table and you tell them your order and they will bring it to You . my friend and I chose table service. It was very pleasant. Mmmm, delicious pastrami on fresh rye bread, with perfect deli mustard and yummy pickles. Pastrami so flavorful I didn't need the mustard, but, I had to put some on for the memories, of long ago, you know? Years ago, I did get a hot dog with mustard and sauerkraut to go, and it was delicious, but this was my first pastrami sandwich and corn beef sandwich eaten in the restaurant with table service in the back. My friend and I decided to get one pastrami sandwich on rye, and one corned beef on rye, so we could each have half and have a taste of pastrami and a taste of corned beef. Both are very good but next time I'll get all pastrami. Ordering one of each sandwich was a nice way to swap half and get a taste of both. All the sandwiches I saw, including the fresh turkey were piled high and they all looked delicious.
Katz's Delicatessen Review If you're looking for an authentic New York experience, Katz's Delicatessen is a must-visit. The atmosphere is lively, filled with a mix of locals and tourists, all eager to savor the iconic flavors this place has to offer. The star of the show, of course, is the pastrami. Expertly carved and piled high on perfectly toasted rye bread, each bite is a testament to the craft that goes into their preparation. The pastrami is juicy and flavorful, with just the right amount of mustard to enhance its richness. I also appreciated the pickle on the side--crisp and tangy, it complemented the sandwich perfectly. Katz's truly lives up to the hype, especially for pastrami lovers. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned visitor, this deli offers a genuine taste of New York that shouldn't be missed.
A tried and true tourist attraction, but I can see why this is a true crowd pleaser. After living in NYC for over 5 years and coming in on a random weekday, I finally got to try the famous pastrami sandwich, Reuben style! This place lives up to their reputation - very old vintage feel with a unique ordering system. You have to get a ticket upon entry (one per person, even if you share one sandwich) and you pay after you return your ticket at the cashier near the entrance. Very tender meat with flavorful sauces - most definitely will come again!
This was my first time trying pastrami and I really liked it! The staff was extremely friendly and let me try the pastrami before ordering it. The sandwich was extremely filling and I only finished half. They pack the leftovers for you when you pay. The place also had lots of seating. The one negative was the price. Just the one sandwich came out to $32. I probably won't be back, but I'm glad I tried it.
Just a legendary spot - whether you liked When Harry Met Sally or not. Just be prepared for a long, crowded wait. But both the pastrami and the Reuben were excellent.
This place is famous for a reason. I went with a friend and it was fantastic. The sandwiches are very expensive but have a lot of meat and are perfect to split. The pastrami was so juicy and flavorful and stacked sky high. The experience ordering is a lot of fun. They have an area with servers but most of the place serves the food straight to you over the counter. They give you a sample and then serve you the sandwiches. It's such an experience. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to enjoy some classic New York pastrami.
Wow, was this a delicious lunch! The famous Katz's deli did not disappoint. We went on a Friday right at noon and the crowd wasn't too bad. The counter was pretty crowded, but we wanted to get a table and be served so we headed all the way to the back where we were seated right away. The service was pretty quick and our food came out in a reasonable time. This was the BEST pastrami sandwich I've ever had and I fear I'm ruined now and no other will measure up. The pastrami was very tender and flavorful. The bread was so soft and fresh. My husband and I ordered one and split it, as we knew it was a large sandwich piled high with meat. Definitely looking forward to the next time I visit NYC so I can enjoy this treat again!
Katz's, an iconic place, I had to try this place. Supposedly it's the most famous deli in the world. If you're visiting New York City you have to come to this place at least once. Here's what happened. We got there and there's a line out the door. That was about 20 minutes or so. You get inside and then it's packed wall to wall and you find a line for one of "the cutters," people who slice the meat and make the sandwiches. As far as seating, it's a free for all and you have to have some luck and good timing to find a spot. So you need to have someone look for a spot to sit and someone stand in line for the food. The cutters sure take their sweet time. They see the never ending line and think to themselves I can work fast or I can work slow but the line will always be out the door. So they decide to work at their own pace. But when you see them slice the meat you see that they know what they're doing. They also give you a sample while they're making your sandwich. What other place does that? This place is known for their pastrami and corn beef so we had to try both. Half corned beef sandwich with bowl of chicken noodle soup and pastrami sandwich. The corned beef was surprisingly just ok, not great. I've had much better elsewhere. But the pastrami was fantastic. Don't know if it's the best but it's definitely up there. And this is a pretty simple sandwich, just pastrami, bread, and some mustard. But it's filled with flavor. One last comment. They have a really interesting system. Stand in line for the sandwiches with a ticket and the cutter will write down on the ticket the total cost of the sandwiches he prepared for you. There's a separate line for sides, a separate line for drinks (non-alcoholic), and another line for alcohol and egg cream. Then there's one line if you're paying with cash and a different line if you're paying with credit card. We said to a worker there, "you have a really weird system" and he replied "yeah, but it works." They've been around for over a hundred years so I guess they're doing something right.
